History

32nd Swansea (Rhyddings Park) Scouts started, following a meeting convened on Thursday 21st January 1926 at 7pm in The Rhyddings Park CM Chapel Schoolroom at the top of Rhyddings Park Road in Brynmill, Swansea. There were twelve boys in attendance.

The next important date for Rhyddings was 11th March 1926 for it was on this night that the boys were invested into the Scout Movement and Leader Warrants were presented to the leaders of the sections.

Between these dates the younger element, boys under eleven years of age, also wished to join, so a decision was taken to start a Wolf Cub Pack. One of the seven new Cubs was Clifford Jones, who remained with the Group in various roles (eventually as President) for 75 years.

The first Troop Camp was held on the farm of Mr John Rogers of Kennixstone Farm, Kennixstone Cross near Llangenith, from 21st July to 7th August 1926.

Rhyddings attended the Birkenhead International Jamboree in 1929, Hungary 1933 and Holland 1937. It was at the Hungary Jamboree that the Group represented Swansea and was allowed to wear a castle on the neckerchiefs. We still wear the Swansea Castle today.

During the war the Troop was run by the patrol leaders as the leaders and Rover Scouts were away on active duty.

Rhyddings has seen many members pass through and go on to notable careers, none more so than our current President The Right Honourable Lord Anderson of Swansea.

Throughout our existence we have moved from our original home a couple of times before arriving at our current location circa 1964.
